Worksop

The train journey north from Nottingham takes one hour passing through the derelict landscape of the former north nottinghamshire coalfield turning from rural past Southwell and Cresswell through Mansfield. Mansfield still has an old fashioned shopping centre on a tilted plane. The people are exceptionally articulate and friendly despite their reputation for fighting. The Chesterfield canal dissects Worksop’s dreary town centre. The town has few redeeming features, except the railway station which offers a convoluted link to Doncaster. The rationale of the Chesterfield canal is to link the river Trent with Chesterfield but the canal via Shireoaks now halts abruptly at Kiveton. From haunting, grandiose and rural the tunnel re-emerges into Rother Valley industrial wasteland. Its possible to keep on the occasionally dry and ox-bow-like canal to Chesterfield.
