From Carlisle cycle to Alston over river Eden and North Peninnes and continue to Haltwistle via The South Tyne Valley. ‘You’ll be glad you did’. Take the train to Newcastle. Stay in a hotel on Newcastle Quayside. From Haltwistle or Corbridge explore the Roman Wall. Steel Rigg is hard to beat. It is not possible to cycle Hadrian’s Wall and buses are infrequent, so decide which form of transport to use. A train journey from Newcastle to Carlisle is good in itself because of the scenery.
Take the Carlisle-Settle Line to Leeds if heading south via Appleby and Settle through the The Peninnes past Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. Access the Lake District mountains on a bicycle but slopes are steep. Lock the bicycle to something immovable and climb the mountain.
