Morpeth

April 13, 2009

Morpeth is a small market town north of Newcastle. From Newcastle Central station alight at Cramlington New Town for a walk through Plessey Woods. Explore southern Northumberland from Morpeth. From Morpeth ride upstream: Dwell a while at the castle ruin set in grassland in the town suburb. Ride in to the Cheviots to Rothbury and Norman Shaw’s Cragside. Rhododendrum intruduced to remote country houses from abroad are inpenetrable and disturbing, paralleling the way red squirrels were usurped by grey squirrels. On the way back follow the river Coquet and visit Brinkburn Priory. Monks from the continent, escaping hunger, war and pestilence founded priories in beautiful remote settings.
