Isle of Wight

May 1, 2009

Set out from Portsmouth by ferry to the Isle of Wight. From Ryde pier cycle clockwise round the island. The path is convoluted sometimes diverting inland and around inlets. Stay in Shanklin overlooking the sea and as high up as possible in order to get a better nocturnal view. Otherwise stay in steep Ventnor. From Blackgang cycle to Freshwater. Divert inland to Winkle Street and Wellow and explore the interior. Visit The Needles via Totland. Return to the mainland via Yarmouth ferry to Lymington. Beware there is limited cycle carriage on South West Trains from Brockenheurst. Portsmouth is better. Instead of cycling from Ryde eastwards cycle along the north coast and roads to Lymington or attempt an inland route to Blackgang. The Isle of Wight is small enough to go on and leave in one day.
